Carbon monoxide detectors: Recognising invisible danger, saving lives.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odourless, colourless and tasteless gas that is produced during combustion processes. Heating systems, ovens, fireplaces and gas boilers can produce CO if there is an insufficient supply of oxygen. And this is where the danger lurks: the highly toxic gas can be inhaled unnoticed and lead to severe poisoning or even death.

Why are carbon monoxide detectors so important?

Carbon monoxide is treacherous as it cannot be perceived by our senses. The first symptoms of CO poisoning - headaches, dizziness, nausea - are often misinterpreted. During sleep, the gas can lead to unconsciousness and death without being noticed.

A carbon monoxide detector is therefore an indispensable lifesaver. It detects the dangerous concentration of CO in the air and sounds a loud alarm signal before it is too late. This gives you the opportunity to leave the building, alert the fire brigade and get to safety.

Where should carbon monoxide detectors be installed?

Carbon monoxide detectors should be installed in every room in which there is a potential source of CO, e.g:

  • Bedroom:  To warn you of danger even when you are asleep.
  • Living room with fireplace or stove:  CO is produced here during the combustion of wood or other fuels.
  • Rooms with gas boilers or heating boilers:  CO can also escape from modern appliances, e.g. in the event of malfunctions or insufficient maintenance.
  • Corridors and stairwells:  To ensure a quick escape route.

What should you look out for when buying a carbon monoxide detector?

  • Certification:  Look for certification in accordance with EN 50291, which confirms the reliability of the detector.
  • Test mark:  The VdS test mark is a further sign of quality.
  • Volume of the alarm signal:  The alarm sound must be loud enough to wake you up even when you are asleep.
  • Battery life:  The batteries should be checked regularly and replaced if necessary.
  • Function display:  An indicator signals that the detector is ready for operation.

Carbon monoxide detectors: A small price for great safety.

Purchasing a carbon monoxide detector is a small investment that can save lives. Protect yourself and your family from the invisible danger and ensure safety in your home and workplace.
